Deadline for proposals: October 1, 2019

This symposium honors the influence of Dr. Susan Birrell, an interdisciplinary scholar whose work has had a major impact on the field of sport studies. Since the 1970s, Dr. Birrell’s pivotal studies on women in sport, gender, sexuality,
sport sociology, feminist theory, racial theories, critical cultural studies, narrative analysis, and “reading” sport have inspired countless scholars. In addition, her authority and mentorship has motivated generations of scholars
to take her formative ideas in new and innovative directions. Participants in this workshop will explore ontological, epistemological, theoretical, empirical, and methodological issues and ideas generated by Dr. Birrell.

Please submit a 500-word abstract and a 200-word biography to Dr. Jaime Schultz (jls1024@psu.edu) by October 1, 2019. Those selected will be notified by October 21, 2019 and are required to provide a 5,000-7,000-word paper to the organizers
by March 23, 2020. Selected participants will engage in a peer review session with partners, present a 15-minute version of their longer paper at the workshop, and participate in commentary and discussion.

Successful papers will be eligible for consideration for publication in the Journal of Sport History Special Issue, “Reading the Past Critically,” edited by Jaime Schultz (Pennsylvania State University), Mary McDonald (Georgia Institute
of Technology), and Tina Parratt (University of Iowa).

The workshop will be held at just prior to the annual meeting of the North American Society for Sport History (NASSH). Participants are strongly encouraged to attend both events and to also present their scholarship at NASSH. NASSH
provides generous financial support for participants’ accommodations and meals during the workshop.
